Frequently asked questions

Is OpenTelemetry free?
Yes — OpenTelemetry SDKs and the Collector are open source (Apache 2.0). You pay for backends (storage, query, alerting) and operational overhead, not for the instrumentation standard itself.
What does OpenTelemetry actually cost?
Total cost = backend vendor or self-hosted infra + SRE time to run Collectors and stores. A mid-size team might spend $2k–$8k/month self-hosting LGTM on AWS versus $8k–$18k on Datadog for the same telemetry profile.
Can I use OpenTelemetry with Datadog or Grafana?
Both accept OTLP. You gain vendor portability but still pay the backend's metered rates. OTel reduces lock-in; it does not automatically reduce spend without sampling and retention discipline.
Which self-hosted stack is cheapest with OpenTelemetry?
For many profiles, LGTM (Prometheus + Loki + Tempo + Grafana) or SigNoz OSS on cloud VMs is lowest TCO. ClickHouse-backed raw storage wins at very high log volume if you build query tooling. See self-hosted rows in the tables below.
