Quick take

Most teams underestimate Datadog by 2–5× because pricing spans 20+ products — not one per-GB line item. Use our calculator with your real host, log, and APM numbers.

Why Datadog Pricing Is So Confusing

Datadog is the most popular observability platform in the world — and also the most expensive for many teams. The reason? Modular pricing across 20+ individual SKUs that interact in complex ways.

Unlike vendors with simple per-GB or per-seat pricing, Datadog charges differently for each product: per-host for infrastructure, per-GB for logs, per-million for spans, per-series for custom metrics, per-session for RUM, and per-test for Synthetics. Each product has its own pricing tiers and overages.

The result: your actual bill can be 2-5x higher than what you estimated during the trial.

The Hidden Costs Nobody Warns You About

1. Custom Metrics Explosion

Datadog charges $5 per 100 custom metric series. This sounds cheap until you realize that a single metric with 5 label dimensions and 10 values each creates 10^5 = 100,000 time series. One poorly labeled metric can add $5,000/month to your bill.

Teams develop "cardinality anxiety" — they stop adding useful labels to metrics because they're afraid of the cost. Your monitoring becomes less useful over time.

2. Log Indexing vs Ingestion

Datadog separates log ingestion ($0.10/GB) from indexing ($1.70 per million events). Ingestion is cheap; indexing is where the money goes. Most teams need to index at least 20% of their logs for search and alerting, which adds up fast.

3. Committed Spend Traps

Datadog offers 30-40% discounts for 1-3 year commitments. The discount is real, but the contract locks in a minimum spend that assumes your infrastructure only grows. If you need to scale down or migrate, you're paying for capacity you don't use.

4. Add-On SKU Creep

It starts with Infrastructure + APM. Then someone adds RUM for frontend monitoring. Then Synthetics for uptime checks. Then Database Monitoring. Then Security Monitoring. Each SKU has its own pricing model and each one increases your bill by 10-30%.

How to Optimize Your Datadog Bill

  1. Audit custom metrics cardinality — Find and fix high-cardinality labels. One cleanup can save thousands per month.
  2. Use log pipelines aggressively — Filter out health checks, debug logs, and repetitive entries before they hit indexing.
  3. Set index retention policies — Not every log needs 15-day hot retention. Use exclusion filters and archive to S3.
  4. Review APM sampling — You don't need 100% trace sampling. Datadog's head-based sampling can reduce APM costs dramatically.
  5. Negotiate at renewal — Come armed with competitor quotes. Datadog's pricing is negotiable, especially at scale.
